Naan Recipe

Naan is the most popular Indian bread, which can be prepared in the restaurant-style at the convenience of your home. This is traditionally made in a Tandoor or clay oven. Fortunately for all of us, it’s possible to make it at home by using an iron tawa or nonstick pan. This is used with chole or any other gravy based dishes. This recipe can be prepared with easily available ingredients in your kitchen. We make this naan with the use of stove top and oven both.

Naan Recipe

Course: Main course
Cuisine: North Indian
Prep Time: 2 hours
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients:

2 cup all-purpose flour (Maida)
1 tsp yeast
½ tsp salt
½ tsp sugar
¼ cup yogurt
1-1/2 tsp oil
½ cup lukewarm water

Instructions:

Dough Process:

In a bowl take ¾ cup of warm water. Dissolve yeast and sugar in it.

Cover and let it rest for 10 minutes or till yeast activates and becomes frothy.

Take flour, salt and sugar in a bowl. Mix well. Add oil and yogurt and mix it with your fingertips.
Now start kneading the dough by adding frothy yeast mixture. If you need, add some water.
Make smooth and soft dough.
Apply some oil to the dough and also the sides of the bowl. Cover it with kitchen cloth or plastic wrap.
Let it rise in warm place for about 3-4 hours or till it gets double or triple in size.
Without Yeast:
If you don’t want to add yeast than add ¼ tsp baking powder and a small pinch of baking soda in place of yeast.

Making naan:

Punch it down with your hand. Give it a single knead to make it smooth. Divide into 8 equal portions and make smooth balls. Roll the dough ball into a thick triangle. You may also use dry flour if required. Roll couple of naans and arrange them on a plate and keep them covered.

Making naan on stove top:

Heat a tawa over medium flame. Now using hands, apply little water on the top part of the rolled triangle and place the naan on the tawa. Now carefully, invert the tawa and roast the naan over the gas flame direct. Once done, transfer it to a serving plate.

Making naan in the oven:

Preheat the oven at 350F for about 20 minutes. Once oven is pre-heated, carefully place it (water side down) on the pan. Close the oven door and cook for 2-3 minutes. After 3 minutes, remove it to a plate using tongue. Apply some butter on top and serve.

Tips :

  • Generally naan is made of maida (All purpose flour) but you can use whole wheat flour as maida is not good for health.
  • Serve hot, cool naan become chewy.
  • You can sprinkle kalonji or black sesame seed on naan at the time of rolling.
